Ethiopian opals are a type of precious opal that are formed from earth’s silica crystal. They are composed of tiny spheres that are arranged in a three-dimensional lattice structure. This lattice structure is responsible for the unique color flashes seen in Ethiopian opals, which is known as play-of-color.
Specimens opals are hydrophane, meaning they have the ability to absorb water and prefer to stay in water to preserve it's beauty and to prevent damage.
These opals shine brightest in direct sunlight or a strong artificial light containing a full spectrum of colors. Ethiopian opals will not shine as bright in most other lower light settings.
